bring into question, call into question

To write clearly and concisely, you can often replace the wordy expression bring into question or call into question with a single verb, such as challenge, question, doubt or dispute.

  • Wordy: These later findings bring the original verdict into question.
  • Concise: These later findings challenge the original verdict.
  • Wordy: As her health improved, the patient called the diagnosis into question.
  • Concise: As her health improved, the patient questioned (or doubted) the diagnosis.
  • Wordy: The injured man called his attacker’s claims into question.
  • Concise: The injured man disputed his attacker’s claims.
