Glossary on the COVID-19 pandemic
By the Translation Bureau
Last updated: April 1, 2021
Ever since COVID-19 emerged in December 2019 and the World Health Organization declared a pandemic in March 2020, our knowledge of the disease and the resulting public health crisis has kept evolving, and so has the language used to talk about it. Effective communication is key: everyone needs to be able to understand the terms related to COVID-19 and use them consistently. This glossary contains English and French terms for 450 concepts in the fields of medicine, sociology and politics, among others. It is designed as a tool for translators, writers and editors as well as anyone responsible for disseminating information during this pandemic.

Note
- The numbers in square brackets "[ ]" that follow a designation indicate that there are different meanings for this designation.

- The usage examples are presented in absolute alphabetical order in each language. The examples in one language are not necessarily equivalent to the examples in another language and some may also be limited to one language.

mRNA vaccine
Types of data | English | French |
---|---|---|
Preferred designations |
|
|
Other designations |

Notes |
After the mRNA vaccine is administered, the body of the vaccinated person produces antigens by translating the administered mRNA. The antigens then stimulate the immune response. Since the vaccine does not contain the whole virus, it does not cause infection. Furthermore, the vaccine's mRNA does not enter the nucleus of the cell. Most RNA vaccines developed to prevent COVID-19 are mRNA vaccines. |

Preferred designations |
|
|
Definitions |
A room in which the air pressure is lower than that of the adjacent rooms. |
Notes |
Due to the pressure difference between the inside and the outside of the room, air can flow in, but not out. This way, contaminated air cannot leave the room except by an air outlet that directs it away from spaces occupied by non-infected people. The air may also be filtered or disinfected before being released in the environment. |

Notes |
The term "physical distancing" puts the emphasis on the physical distance required between people and removes the implication that people must remain socially isolated. As for the term "social distancing," it can be understood as the fact of keeping one's distance in society. |
