Domestic Violence Glossary (common law)

By the Translation Bureau

Find the English and French equivalents to 156 concepts related to domestic violence.

The Domestic Violence Glossary (common law) is part of a project undertaken in 1981 by the National Program for the Integration of Both Official Languages in the Administration of Justice, later known as Promoting Access to Justice in Both Official Languages (PAJLO), to standardize French common law terminology.

The glossary covers 156 concepts examined by the Standardization Committee, members of which are the Centre de traduction et de terminologie juridiques (CTTJ) of the Université de Moncton (which also coordinated the project), the Centre for Legal Translation and Documentation of the University of Ottawa, the Translation Bureau of the Government of Canada, the Centre de ressources en français juridique of the Université de Saint-Boniface, and the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law of McGill University.

The term-analysis documents used by the Standardization Committee to standardize the French equivalents may be consulted on the CTTJ's website (available only in French).

The Standardization Committee would like to express its gratitude to the User Committee members who so kindly provided their comments. The jurilinguistic centres' contributions to this project have been made possible by funding from the Department of Justice Canada under the Access to Justice in Both Official Languages Support Fund.
