commas properly omitted

Do not use commas between the name and the number of an organizational unit:

  • Teamsters Union Local 91
  • Loyal Order of  Moose 1765

Do not insert commas in numerical expressions such as the following:

  • 2 years 6 months 7 days
  • a 2-year 6-month sentence
  • a 3-minute 50-second mile
  • h 12 min 55 s

Do not insert commas between words that share a close grammatical bond (e.g. a subject and its verb; a verb or preposition and its complement):

  • Incorrect: The woman who gave the presentation on marriage customs in Timbuktu, loved visiting exotic and exciting places like, Bangkok or Istanbul.
  • Correct: The woman who gave the presentation on marriage customs in Timbuktu loved visiting exotic and exciting places like Bangkok or Istanbul.

Do not insert commas in dates consisting only of the month and year:

  • by March 2017
  • in October 2009
