kudos, kudo, compliment

Kudos is a Greek word indicating praise.

  • Rafael basked in the kudos bestowed by his colleagues.

Although kudos ends with an s, it is a singular noun and should always be used with a singular verb.

  • Is the kudos you received from your boss the reason for your cheerful disposition?

The singular kudo is non-standard and should be avoided; substitute the verb or noun compliment, instead.

  • The skating judges gave Ilya kudos (not a kudo) on his performance.
