fleur-de-lys, fleur-de-lis

While fleur-de-lys is the preferred spelling in Canadian English, fleur-de-lis is also correct. Note the two hyphens.

  • The stylized lily which appears on many of Canada’s flags and shields is called a “fleur-de-lys.”

To form the plural, add an s to the word fleur: fleurs-de-lys (or fleurs-de-lis).

  • On the Quebec flag, four white fleurs-de-lys occupy the quadrants formed by a white cross on a blue field.

The flag of Quebec is called the Fleurdelisé and is written with an uppercase F.

  • The Fleurdelisé flew at half-mast in honour of the victims of the fire.
