hors d’oeuvre

Hors d’oeuvre (French for “appetizer”) is widely used by English writers; consequently, it does not require italics.

  • May I have the recipe for that delicious hors d’oeuvre?

The plural may be written hors d’oeuvre or hors d’oeuvres.

  • Sigrid served a large platter of assorted hors d’oeuvre (or hors d’oeuvres).

Note that the indefinite article an is used with hors d’oeuvre because the h is silent.

  • The chamber music concert was just an hors d’oeuvre before the weekend music festival.
