insinuate, insinuate into

Insinuate has the same meaning as imply, but with unpleasant or negative connotations. To insinuate oneself into a group or situation is to move deliberately into such a position. This usage is almost always reflexive, requiring a pronoun such as myself, yourself, herself or themselves.

  • Are you insinuating that the candidate is dishonest?
  • Percy insinuated himself into the polo-playing crowd just to get their investment business.
  • Jan slyly insinuated her way into the inner circle.
