leach, leech

A liquid leaches (spelled ea) through soils or minerals, and minerals are leached away by water.

  • The early settlers made potash by leaching water through ashes, and then used the potash to make soap.

A leech (spelled ee) is a worm–like animal that sucks blood, or a person who takes advantage of others.

  • Modern surgeons use leeches to promote healing after microsurgery.
  • What a leech! He claims to have no money on him, and expects his friends to pay for his food and drinks.
