pedal, peddle

The noun pedal refers to something that you push with your foot to make a machine move, work or stop. It can also refer to a lever on a piano or organ that you push with your foot to make or change a sound.

  • The pedals on Ron’s bike need to be replaced.
  • The little girl was too short to reach the pedals on the organ.

The verb pedal means to push the pedals of something, such as a bicycle.

  • Rebecca pedalled as fast as she could to reach the scene of the accident.
  • The girls rented a pedal boat and tired themselves out by pedaling.

The verb peddle means “to sell or hawk.”

  • The villagers peddled their crafts by the side of the road.
