Avoid the expression “The reason … is (or was) because …,” which is often condemned as redundant.
A sentence beginning "The reason … is" should be followed by a noun or a noun phrase, or by a noun clause (usually introduced by that).
- The reason the trip was cancelled was a lack of funds.
- The reason for the success of the project was that the financial requirements had been correctly estimated.
