Yellowknife, Yellowknifer

A native or resident of the Northwest Territories’ capital city, Yellowknife, is called a Yellowknifer. While this demonym is found in newspapers and magazines, it is often replaced in more formal writing by native, resident or inhabitant of Yellowknife, or some similar phrase.

  • Yellowknifers (or The people of Yellowknife) celebrate the summer solstice with a festival called Raven Mad Daze.
  • Nancy was born in Toronto but has been a Yellowknifer (or has lived in Yellowknife) for twenty years.

Yellowknife is commonly used as a modifier, while Yellowknifer is not.

  • The Yellowknife fireworks display on Canada Day cannot start before midnight because it is not dark enough!
